Celebrate NZ Music month with this entertaining double-bill of two new NZ compositions. These winners in Opera Factory’s composition contest will be premiered in a fully staged season. 

‘Ulla’s Odyssey’ composed by Anthony Young. An enchanting nautical fantasy about a young girl’s solo sail around the world, the mythical creatures and environmental obstacles she encounters on her journey. Libretto is by Leanna Brodie from Canada. 

‘Love Thy Neighbour’ composed by 17yr old Callum Blackmore an amusing tragic-comedy about a gardening guru and her hypochondriac neighbour and a prize winning turnip called ‘Winston’, who brings harmony to the situation.

Titanic Tunes  Sunday 15 April, 5pm  

Our afternoon soiree commemorating the anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic as a sell out. The happy & touching collection of period ballads, arias and newly composed exceprt about the Astors on board, the concert closed with a sobering reminder of this historical tragedy. 

Chamber Opera Composition Contest  

Winning Workshops - 25-26 February     All winning chamber opear works were workshopped with the judging panel, composers and a selection of singers, over the weekend. We had a really enjoyable and successful exploration of several scene selections from each piece. The workshops were kindly supported by Creative New Zealand.

First Prize Open Section: $4000    Awarded to "Ulla's Odyssey" a nautical fantasy by Anthony Young (libretto by Leanna Brodie)

Runner Up Open section: $1000   Awarded to "The Kiri Masterclass" an in-house comedy by Claire Scholes (libretto by the composer)

First Prize in Under 30's/Secondary School Section: $1000   Awarded to "Love Thy Neighbour" - a comedy by Callum Blackmore(libretto by the composer)

Commendation Awards : $250 each   Awarded in the Under 30's section to Warren Kilham for his children's fantasy "Deep Sea Pirates" (libretto by composer).   Awarded to secondary school student Daniel Sun of Christchurch for his student opera "Under the Cabbage Tree" (libretto by the composer)

Several other entries were close contenders and the composers have allowed Opera Factory to retain perusal scores for possible consideration in the future.  The winning entries will be explored in workshops 24-26 February and then sonsidered for a premiere season in May 2012. Entries closed 30 January 2012.

OPERA IDOL SINGING CONTEST

16 SEPTEMBER 7.30PM , 2011

Congratulations on a wonderful night of singing from the fine young talents. Judges awarded the following prizes:  14yrs & under:  1st  Hyun Young Park  2nd Tayla Alexander  3rd Alysia Han.     15-18yrs:  1st  Callum Blackmore   2nd Kelly Harris   3rd  Jonathan Dunlop

OPERA AT ZARBO was held on Thursday 6 October 2011 featuring Helen Medlyn, Emma Sloman and Cameron Barclay peforming a night of cabaret style opera at Zarbo, Newmarket’s top café and delicatessen. The night included an opera quiz and touching performances of operatic delights from our guest artists, with wonderful accompianment by pianist Reg Towers.   

Papageno, 20-22 July 2011

The kids took over the Factory with a slick youth adaptation of Mozart’s masterful opera ‘The Magic Flute’. 

The Turn of the Screw  8-11 March 2011

Our 2011 season of this dark and gripping tale was a success with the critics and audience alike. We even recieved the award for Best Production-Music from the Auckland Fringe Festival.
